Cal Crutchlow's surprise MotoGP comeback is set to continue after LCR Honda confirmed the British rider will remain with the team for the upcoming Czech Grand Prix at Brno and Dutch Grand Prix at Assen.
The 40-year-old has been filling in for the injured Johann Zarco, whose recovery from serious knee ligament injuries is taking longer than initially expected. LCR team boss Lucio Cecchinello recently indicated that Zarco could be sidelined for several months, leaving the team in need of an experienced replacement.
Crutchlow was drafted in at short notice for the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, marking an unexpected return to MotoGP after several years away from regular competition. His comeback was far from straightforward, as he was forced to retire from the race after suffering a muscle injury near his shoulder blade.
However, the former MotoGP race winner recovered in time for the Hungarian Grand Prix at Balaton Park, where he completed the full race distance and continued adapting to Honda's RC213V. Despite finishing outside the points, Crutchlow viewed the weekend as a positive step forward after such a lengthy absence from racing.
Following his latest appearance, Crutchlow described the Hungarian race as one of the most physically demanding experiences of his career. He acknowledged that results remain secondary at this stage, with the focus instead on rebuilding fitness, understanding the bike and making gradual progress each time he takes to the track.
The next two rounds will carry special significance for the British rider. Brno is the circuit where he secured both his maiden MotoGP podium in 2012 and his first premier-class victory in 2016. Assen also holds fond memories, having delivered a podium finish during his successful years with Honda.
Crutchlow's continued presence provides valuable experience for LCR Honda as the team awaits Zarco's return. While the veteran is still working his way back to full race sharpness, his extended stint on the grid offers Honda additional feedback and stability during a challenging period.
With Zarco's recovery timeline still uncertain, Crutchlow's comeback story may yet have a few more chapters to write as MotoGP heads into the heart of the European summer schedule.
