At just 17 years old, Veda Pratama has already become the first Indonesian rider to stand on a Grand Prix podium. From dominating Asia's junior ranks to shining in Moto3, the Honda Team Asia rookie is emerging as one of motorcycle racing's brightest young talents.

Indonesia has long been one of MotoGP's most passionate markets, but it has never produced a rider capable of consistently challenging at the highest levels of Grand Prix racing. That may finally be changing thanks to Veda Pratama.

The 17-year-old Honda Team Asia rider has quickly become one of the most talked-about names in Moto3 after making history as the first Indonesian rider to claim a Grand Prix podium. His breakthrough third-place finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix has elevated him from promising prospect to national sporting sensation.

Born in Wonosari, Yogyakarta, Pratama's journey began at an early age under the guidance of his father, Sudarmono, a former Indonesian motorcycle racer. He started riding minibikes at five years old and was already competing in races by the age of six. His talent became evident when he won the Indonesian National Club Underbone Championship at just 10 years old.

Pratama's rise accelerated through MotoGP's development pathway. After impressing in the Idemitsu Asia Talent Cup, he made history in 2023 by becoming the first Indonesian rider to win the series. That success earned him a promotion to the highly competitive Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, where he continued to impress by becoming the first Indonesian race winner in the championship before finishing runner-up in 2025.

His performances opened the door to a Moto3 seat with Honda Team Asia for the 2026 season, and he wasted little time making an impact.

Pratama announced himself immediately at the season-opening Thai Grand Prix, qualifying fifth and finishing fifth on his debut. One race later in Brazil, he delivered a landmark result by charging to third place, securing Indonesia's first-ever Grand Prix podium in any prototype world championship class.

The achievement was even more remarkable considering it came during only his second Grand Prix weekend. The result instantly placed him among Moto3's most exciting young riders and strengthened hopes that Indonesia could one day have its first MotoGP rider.

What makes Pratama particularly exciting is not just his results, but the way he achieves them. He has earned a reputation for aggressive overtaking, strong racecraft and an ability to stay calm under pressure. Those qualities were on full display in Brazil, where he fought his way through the field after a race restart to snatch a podium finish.

His rapid adaptation to new circuits has also drawn praise throughout the paddock. Despite being a rookie, he has regularly challenged more experienced rivals and established himself as one of the leading newcomers in the championship.

Beyond the statistics, Pratama represents something much bigger for Indonesian motorsport. In a nation of more than 270 million people and millions of motorcycle enthusiasts, he has become a symbol of what is possible for the next generation of riders. Many now view him as the country's strongest candidate yet to eventually reach MotoGP.

While Pratama still has a long road ahead, his early achievements suggest the hype is well justified. With a Grand Prix podium already on his résumé and his Moto3 career only just beginning, Indonesia's teenage star appears poised to become one of the sport's defining talents for years to come.
