Carlos Alcaraz is set to return to the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after accepting a wild card for the ATP 500 tournament, adding another important stop to his schedule as the 2026 season approaches its conclusion.
The Spaniard will compete at the Wiener Stadthalle from October 26 to November 1, joining a strong field that includes Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and Alex de Minaur.
With the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals in Turin approaching, the tournament offers Alcaraz an opportunity to gain more match practice on indoor hard courts while testing himself against several leading players on the ATP Tour.
Alcaraz previously competed in Vienna in 2021, when he was just 18 years old. He enjoyed an impressive run to the semi-finals, defeating former world No. 1 Andy Murray before losing to eventual champion Zverev.
His return comes after another successful season in which he has collected titles at the Australian Open, Doha and Tokyo. Despite suffering an early exit in the third round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters, Alcaraz has already secured qualification for the ATP Finals.
The Vienna tournament could therefore play an important role in his preparations for the season-ending championship. Indoor hard courts present a different challenge from outdoor conditions, with faster rallies and less influence from the weather often placing greater emphasis on serving, returning and taking control of points early.
For Alcaraz, competing against experienced indoor-court specialists should provide valuable preparation before he faces the world's best players in Turin.
However, the Spaniard will have little room for error in Vienna, with several established contenders also expected to compete for the title. Zverev, who previously defeated Alcaraz in the 2021 semi-finals, will be among the notable names in the draw, while Medvedev and De Minaur could also provide difficult challenges.
The ATP 500 event offers valuable ranking points as well as an opportunity to build momentum ahead of the final stretch of the season. With the ATP Finals representing one of the biggest remaining targets on the calendar, every match could help Alcaraz fine-tune his game before the campaign reaches its climax.
His decision to accept the wild card adds further interest to an already competitive Vienna field. Having reached the semi-finals on his previous appearance, Alcaraz will now look to make another strong impression as he prepares for the final major test of his 2026 season.
