Cal Crutchlow continued his return to MotoGP action with a productive outing in Saturday's Sprint race at Balaton Park, crossing the line in 22nd place while gathering crucial experience on an unfamiliar circuit.
The Castrol Honda LCR replacement rider made a solid start and focused on managing both his physical condition and race pace throughout the contest.
Despite still working his way back to full fitness, Crutchlow was encouraged by how his body responded during the race, particularly his recovering shoulder.
"The shoulder is not too bad, actually better than I expected. I wanted to save some energy and manage the race in a smart way, and we managed to do that."
The British rider adopted a measured approach, maintaining a consistent pace while avoiding unnecessary risks. His main objective was to better understand the bike and the demands of the circuit rather than chase positions.
Crutchlow admitted he was losing time in sections that required rapid changes of direction but felt competitive in other areas of the track.
"I'm losing some time in the changes of direction, but in other areas I'm performing quite well. Right now, we're not focused on the result; we're focused on understanding more and continuing to make progress."
With Balaton Park making its MotoGP debut, Crutchlow faced the additional challenge of learning a completely new circuit without any previous racing references.
Even so, he was pleased with the progress achieved and the growing confidence he is building aboard the Honda machine.
"This circuit is demanding for me because I have no references here, as it's completely new. In any case, we're doing a good job and I'm feeling comfortable on the bike. Let's see what we can do tomorrow!"
The Sprint provided another valuable step in Crutchlow's adaptation process as he looks to carry the lessons learned into Sunday's Grand Prix.
