Novak Djokovic fought back to defeat Alexander Zverev in Beijing, calling the victory one of his best performances of 2026 as he prepares to face Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals.

Novak Djokovic believes he has rediscovered his best level at the China Open after producing one of his most impressive performances of the 2026 season to defeat Alexander Zverev in Beijing.

The 39-year-old Serbian fought back from a set down to beat Zverev 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a demanding quarter-final that lasted deep into the evening. Djokovic later described the victory as one of his standout performances this season, putting it alongside his Australian Open semi-final against Jannik Sinner.

The result was particularly significant given the form Zverev has shown throughout the year. Djokovic described the German as probably the best player in the world at the moment, highlighting the pressure created by his powerful serve and consistency from the baseline.

Zverev had taken the opening set and appeared to be in control, but Djokovic gradually found a way to disrupt his opponent's rhythm. The 101-time tour-level champion remained composed through the long rallies and raised his level when the match entered its decisive stages.

For Djokovic, the performance was also a sign that his physical condition is finally improving after a season disrupted by various physical problems. He arrived in Beijing with a 17-7 record for the year, but has now won back-to-back three-set matches after also needing three sets to get past Buyunchaokete.

Despite the demanding schedule, Djokovic said he was feeling physically pretty good, giving him renewed confidence heading into the final stages of the tournament.

That confidence will be tested immediately in the semi-finals, where he will face Daniil Medvedev. Djokovic leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 10-5, but he is well aware of the threat posed by the Russian, who is also enjoying a strong run and has recently won a tournament.

Medvedev's record in China also adds another layer to the challenge, making another high-level performance essential if Djokovic is to continue his push for the China Open title.

After a season in which fitness issues repeatedly interrupted his progress, Djokovic now appears to have found some momentum in Beijing. His victory over Zverev could prove to be an important confidence boost, but Medvedev stands between him and a place in the final.
