Erling Haaland urges Manchester City to show greater attacking urgency after scoring the winner in their five-goal Champions League victory over RB Leipzig.

Erling Haaland has called on Manchester City to show greater attacking urgency after their victory over RB Leipzig, despite scoring the decisive goal in a five-goal Champions League encounter. The Norwegian striker was pleased to help his team secure the win but believes City must do more to finish off matches when they take the lead.

Key Highlights:

  • Erling Haaland scored the winning goal against RB Leipzig, taking his career tally against the German side to 13 goals in nine games.
  • Manchester City initially took the lead through Castello Lukeba's own goal before conceding twice to Ridle Baku and Antonio Nusa.
  • Haaland urged City to improve their decision-making, ball retention and attacking approach when protecting a lead.
  • City will look to end their two-match domestic losing streak when they face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this weekend.

Haaland Calls for Greater Attacking Urgency From Manchester City

Erling Haaland delivered the decisive moment for Manchester City after they travelled to Germany following consecutive Premier League defeats and a Carabao Cup penalty shootout victory over Brighton. The Norwegian forward converted Elliot Anderson's low cross with just his 13th touch of the match, extending his remarkable record against RB Leipzig to 13 goals in nine appearances.

Despite securing the victory, Haaland was not entirely satisfied with City's performance, particularly their failure to extend their advantage when they were in control. Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Haaland expressed his happiness at helping the team win but stressed that City needed to be more aggressive when they were ahead.

"The most important is that I helped the team to win, and I managed to do that today, so I'm super happy. "I think in the end, we need to step up a little bit because I think when we were 1-0 up, I think we need to push forward a bit more to go at it, to go for the second and then hopefully go for the third. That's what we have to do as a club, we have to work on that."

Defensive Mistakes Put Manchester City Under Pressure

City initially moved ahead before half-time when Castello Lukeba turned Nico O'Reilly's cross into his own net. However, their advantage did not last as Ridle Baku found the net by beating Gianluigi Donnarumma at his near post.

Enzo Fernandez restored City's lead with a 57th-minute header, but Antonio Nusa responded just three minutes later to bring Leipzig level again. The defensive lapses left City needing another attacking contribution to secure the result, with Haaland eventually stepping up to deliver the winning goal.

The striker also highlighted the importance of improving City's overall decision-making and teamwork in both phases of play. "I think keep the ball, when to keep it, when to go, and working together, both offensively, defensively, loads of different things. That's a good part, you can always get better, and there's always a new chance in a new game in three days, so that's lovely."

Haaland Unfazed by Limited Touches Against Leipzig

Despite having relatively few touches throughout the match, Haaland once again demonstrated his ability to make an impact when the opportunity arrived. According to Opta, his goal against Leipzig took his scoring tally against the German side to its highest total against any opponent across Europe's top five leagues.

When asked about his limited involvement before scoring, the Norwegian offered two ways of looking at the situation. He explained that staying concentrated throughout the match could be challenging, but he preferred to view his limited touches as an opportunity to remain focused until the right moment arrived.

"You can look at it that is difficult to keep concentrated for around 100 minutes, or you can look at it in a positive way that it's only 100 minutes that you have to fully focus to hopefully be ready when the chance comes. You can look at it in a few different ways, and I look at it in the second option."

Nottingham Forest Clash Next for Manchester City

Manchester City will now turn their attention to their domestic campaign as they prepare to face Nottingham Forest at the City Ground this weekend. Enzo Maresca's second-placed side are looking to end a two-match domestic losing streak and regain momentum before the international break.

Improving their defensive organisation will be important after conceding avoidable goals against Leipzig. City will also need to show greater attacking urgency when taking the lead if they want to maintain their challenge in the title race. A victory over Forest would provide an opportunity to return to winning ways in domestic competition.
