Two-time world champion insists his 2027 decision involves more than the team's crucial Hungary upgrade package

Fernando Alonso has stressed that his Formula 1 future is not dependent on Aston Martin's long-awaited upgrade package, despite Adrian Newey expressing hope that it could persuade the Spaniard to continue with the team.

Key Highlights

  • Fernando Alonso says Aston Martin's upcoming Hungary upgrade will not determine whether he stays in Formula 1 beyond 2026.
  • Adrian Newey hopes the new package will convince Alonso to remain with the team for the 2027 season.
  • Alonso plans to make a decision on his future during the summer break following the Hungarian Grand Prix.
  • The Spaniard believes the Hungary upgrade is vital for Aston Martin's long-term direction and 2027 development.

Alonso Dismisses Upgrade as Deciding Factor

Aston Martin has struggled under the 2026 regulations, collecting just one point through the opening eight rounds while, at times, running as much as one second off the pace. The Silverstone-based outfit has deliberately held back on introducing smaller updates, instead focusing on a major upgrade package scheduled for the Hungarian Grand Prix to address the AMR26's excess weight.

Newey Hoping for Positive Impact

The lack of competitiveness has limited Alonso's ability to demonstrate his pace, while the 44-year-old's contract is due to expire at the end of the 2026 season, leaving his future uncertain.

Earlier this week, Newey said he hoped the Hungary upgrade would be enough to convince the two-time Formula 1 world champion to remain with Aston Martin beyond 2026. He added that Alonso's experience, feedback and development skills make him "a tremendous asset," but acknowledged that the Spaniard wants to see "clear, tangible progress" before committing to another season.

"Fernando is really looking forward to the upgrade and, if it performs, we hope he'll be in the cockpit for another season," said Newey.

Summer Break Decision Planned

Speaking ahead of this weekend's British Grand Prix, Alonso rejected the suggestion that the upgrade alone would determine his future. "I cannot say that it's really connected," said Alonso. "Because if the car is good or bad, there are other factors that I need to think about."

The Spaniard also confirmed that he intends to decide on the summer break immediately following the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Hungary Upgrade Key for Aston Martin's Future

Although Alonso separated the upgrade from his contract decision, he emphasised that it remains hugely important for Aston Martin's long-term prospects as attention increasingly shifts toward the 2027 car. He explained that the team deliberately waited to introduce a comprehensive package after recognising the AMR26's shortcomings, including a lack of downforce, power, gearbox performance and experience.

Alonso said the Hungary update must demonstrate the team understands the car's weaknesses, particularly regarding the aerodynamic package, while addressing the specific handling issues drivers have experienced throughout the season.

If those problems are improved in Hungary and the car can be driven at its full potential, Alonso believes Aston Martin will have a clear direction and positive momentum to build a stronger package for next season.
