What began as a temporary solution has quickly developed into one of Malaysia’s most promising women’s doubles partnerships. Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan and Low Zi Yu have climbed the rankings at remarkable speed, turning heads with a series of impressive performances on the international stage.

Six months ago, few would have predicted that Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan and Low Zi Yu would emerge as one of Malaysia's brightest women's doubles prospects.

The pair came together following an unexpected reshuffle in the national junior setup after Low's former partner, Dania Sofea Zaidi, suffered a serious ACL injury. At the time, Noraqilah was primarily focused on mixed doubles and had been competing in women's doubles alongside her younger sister, Noraina Maisarah.

What initially appeared to be a temporary arrangement quickly evolved into a partnership full of potential.

The duo wasted little time making an impact. Competing together for the first time at the World Junior Championships in 2023, they produced an impressive run to the final before settling for the silver medal. Their immediate success highlighted a natural understanding on court and suggested a bright future ahead.

Since then, their progress has accelerated.

Earlier this year, Noraqilah and Zi Yu captured the Estonian International title before reaching the final of the Baoji China Masters. They also gained valuable experience on the senior stage and announced themselves as genuine contenders during the Uber Cup Finals, where they stunned Japan's highly ranked pairing of Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.

Their latest breakthrough came at the Australian Open, where they reached the quarter-finals of a World Tour Super 500 event for the first time. Along the way, they secured a notable victory over Taiwan's world No. 8 pair Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En Tzu, reversing an earlier defeat and demonstrating their growing ability to compete against the world's best.

The strong showing in Australia lifted them 14 places in the world rankings to a career-high No. 70, further strengthening their status as one of Malaysia's most exciting young combinations.

Despite their rapid rise, Noraqilah remains focused on long-term progress rather than immediate expectations.

The pair have set a short-term target of breaking into the world's top 50 before turning their attention to higher goals. Rather than looking too far ahead, they are determined to continue improving step by step.

For Noraqilah, recent tournaments have also highlighted areas that still require attention. She believes consistency remains the biggest challenge, particularly when facing elite opponents where even small lapses can prove costly.

The partnership will take a brief pause over the coming weeks as Zi Yu teams up with Noraina for the Asian Junior Championships. However, the separation is only temporary, and both players are expected to reunite with greater experience and confidence.

For Malaysian badminton, their emergence offers fresh optimism. What started as an unexpected partnership has quickly become one of the country's most promising success stories, with Noraqilah and Zi Yu showing every sign that their journey is only just beginning.
