Malaysia's Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin are back in the Denmark Open quarter-finals for the first time since 2021 after defeating compatriots Chia Weijie and Teo Ee Yi. They now face China's Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in a rematch of their Asian Games quarter-final defeat.

Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin have ended a five-year wait to reach the men's doubles quarter-finals at the Denmark Open, keeping their hopes of securing another title alive at the Super 750 tournament.

The world No. 6 Malaysians booked their place in the last eight with a convincing 21-18, 21-11 victory over compatriots Chia Weijie and Teo Ee Yi. They needed just 28 minutes to complete the win and return to the stage they last reached in 2021, when they advanced to the semi-finals.

The result adds to an encouraging season for Sze Fei and Izzuddin, who have consistently challenged for honours on the international circuit. They have reached at least the quarter-finals in eight of their last 10 individual tournaments, demonstrating their ability to maintain a high level across competitions.

The Malaysian pair have already enjoyed title-winning campaigns this year, capturing the Indonesia Masters in January and the Indonesia Open in June. They also finished runners-up at the Malaysia Masters and reached the semi-finals of the Japan Open, alongside quarter-final appearances at the World Championships and Asian Games.

Their latest progress in Denmark provides another opportunity to build on that momentum, but a difficult test awaits in the next round.

Sze Fei and Izzuddin are set to face China's world No. 2 combination Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, who defeated the Malaysians in the Asian Games quarter-finals last month with a 21-13, 21-17 victory.

The Chinese pair also hold a 4-1 advantage in their head-to-head record, although the Malaysians have beaten them before, winning their semi-final encounter at the 2024 Arctic Open.

The upcoming match offers Sze Fei and Izzuddin a chance to respond to their recent defeat and strengthen their bid for another major title. However, they will need to produce a more consistent performance against opponents who have generally had the upper hand in their previous meetings.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's mixed doubles campaign suffered a narrow setback as Chen Tang Jie and Chan Wen Tse were eliminated by China's sixth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui.

The temporary Malaysian pairing pushed their opponents through a tense 65-minute contest before losing 23-21, 18-21, 20-22.

Despite the defeat, Tang Jie and Wen Tse showed considerable fighting spirit in the deciding game. After falling behind 5-15, they mounted an impressive comeback to level the score at 20-20, only for the Chinese pair to win the final two points and secure the match.

The temporary partnership was formed while Tang Jie's regular partner, Toh Ee Wei, recovers from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Their performance in Denmark offers encouragement for Malaysia's mixed doubles department, particularly after they also put up a competitive fight against world No. 1 pair Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping at the Arctic Open.

While the mixed doubles campaign has ended, Sze Fei and Izzuddin remain in contention for the Denmark Open title. Their upcoming clash with Liang and Wang will be a crucial test of their form, resilience and ability to challenge one of the world's leading men's doubles combinations.
