Hubert Hurkacz and Stefanos Tsitsipas opened their Rolex Shanghai Masters campaigns with straight-set wins, while British No. 1 Cameron Norrie suffered a surprise defeat to qualifier Dalibor Svrcina on October 8.

The 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters continued on Thursday, October 8, with Hubert Hurkacz and Stefanos Tsitsipas among the players advancing to the next round. However, the day's action also brought a major surprise as British No. 1 Cameron Norrie fell to Czech qualifier Dalibor Svrcina in three sets.

Hurkacz made a strong start against Australia's James Duckworth, winning 6-3, 7-6(4). The Polish player delivered 19 aces and kept his composure in the second-set tiebreak to seal the victory in straight sets.

Hurkacz will now face Novak Djokovic in what promises to be a challenging test. His powerful serve could be a key weapon against the Serbian star as he looks to make a deep run in Shanghai.

Tsitsipas also progressed without dropping a set, defeating Belgian qualifier Kimmer Coppejans 6-3, 7-5. The Greek player handled the key moments well to secure his place in the next round.

The biggest upset of the day came when Svrcina defeated Norrie 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. After losing the second set, the Czech qualifier regained control in the decider to eliminate the British player and secure one of the day's most notable wins.

Elsewhere, Italy's Matteo Arnaldi recorded a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory over Australian qualifier Bernard Tomic. Chinese wildcard Bu Yunchaokete also delighted the home crowd, beating France's Luca Van Assche 7-6(3), 6-3.

Other notable winners included Jenson Brooksby, who defeated Jaume Munar 7-5, 6-4, and Pablo Carreno Busta, who recovered from a set down to beat Mariano Navone 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

Sebastian Baez and Botic van de Zandschulp also fought back from losing the opening set to win their matches. Baez overcame Marcos Giron 1-6, 6-3, 6-4, while van de Zandschulp defeated Daniel Merida by the same scoreline.

The day's remaining winners included Jan-Lennard Struff, Zizou Bergs, Pavel Kotov, Nuno Borges, Thiago Agustin Tirante, Zachary Svajda, Camilo Ugo Carabelli, Adolfo Daniel Vallejo and Juan Manuel Cerundolo.

With several qualifiers and lower-ranked players advancing, Thursday's results showed how unpredictable the Shanghai Masters can be. The competition will continue as the remaining contenders look to build momentum and move closer to the title.
