Joan Mir will miss the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix after health concerns that emerged during the San Marino GP forced the Honda rider to step away from racing.
The 2020 MotoGP world champion first experienced a severe lack of energy and persistent headaches at Misano, where he admitted he did not feel “even 50%” of himself. Despite attempting to compete in Sunday’s race, Mir retired after just five laps as his condition prevented him from continuing.
Further medical examinations in Barcelona revealed “altered parameters” in his bloodwork. While the exact cause of his symptoms remains unclear, Mir’s medical team has recommended that he focus on recovery and undergo additional tests before returning to competition.

In his absence, Honda has called on test and development rider Takaaki Nakagami to take over the RC213V at the Red Bull Ring. The Japanese rider was already scheduled to participate in a post-race test in Austria, making the replacement a practical opportunity to gain valuable race-weekend experience.
Nakagami is also expected to make a wildcard appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix, giving him another chance to contribute to Honda’s development efforts. The Austrian weekend will provide additional track time as he prepares for that assignment.
Mir’s return remains dependent on the outcome of his medical examinations and recovery. Both the rider and Honda are reportedly targeting the Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi, although his participation will depend on his fitness.
For now, Honda’s priority is ensuring Mir receives the necessary medical attention, while Nakagami prepares to step into the factory team’s lineup at the Austrian Grand Prix.
