The race for the Nitto ATP Finals is becoming increasingly difficult to predict, with Rafael Jodar and Taylor Fritz making significant moves following the Mubadala DC Open in Washington.
Jodar's breakthrough run to his first ATP 500 final has moved him eight places to 11th in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. The 19-year-old Spaniard now sits just 161 points behind eighth-placed Alex de Minaur, putting him firmly in the fight for one of the remaining spots at the season-ending tournament.
Jodar's rise has been remarkable considering where he was less than a year ago. In November 2025, he was still studying at the University of Virginia and had yet to make his ATP Tour debut.
His breakthrough came at the Next Gen ATP Finals in December, where he defeated Learner Tien and Martin Landaluce. Since then, his progress has accelerated rapidly.
Jodar won his first ATP Tour title in Marrakech this season and has also reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros, Rome and Madrid. His run in Washington has now given him another major boost as he looks to make an unlikely push for Turin.
If he qualifies for the Nitto ATP Finals, Jodar would become only the third player to reach the season-ending event immediately after competing at the Next Gen ATP Finals in the previous year.
Stefanos Tsitsipas achieved the feat after playing the Next Gen ATP Finals in 2018 before qualifying for the Nitto ATP Finals in 2019, while Carlos Alcaraz followed the same path in 2021 and 2022.
Fritz also strengthened his position in the race by winning the Washington title on home soil. The American climbed five places to 10th in the Live Race To Turin, giving his hopes of qualifying a significant boost.
The 28-year-old is targeting his fourth appearance at the season-ending event after previously reaching the final in 2024.
His Washington triumph was particularly important given how tightly packed the standings have become. Just 375 points separate a group of players battling for positions around the qualification places, meaning a strong performance at the next few tournaments could dramatically change the picture.

Novak Djokovic currently occupies sixth place with 2,310 points, while Tommy Paul sits 14th with 1,935 points. With such small margins separating the contenders, every victory and deep tournament run could prove decisive.
Attention now turns to the Montreal Masters, where several players in the qualification battle will be looking to make up ground.
Felix Auger-Aliassime, Alex de Minaur, Ben Shelton, Jakub Mensik, Arthur Fils and Tommy Paul are among those chasing valuable points. Shelton and de Minaur arrive in Montreal after reaching the quarter-finals in Washington, while Auger-Aliassime will have the backing of the home crowd as he continues his pursuit of a maiden Masters 1000 title.
With Jannik Sinner already assured of his place in Turin, the remaining qualification spots are still very much up for grabs.
The Nitto ATP Finals will take place from November 15 to 22, and with the North American hard-court season now underway, the battle for Turin is entering a crucial stage. For rising star Jodar and established contender Fritz, the next few weeks could go a long way towards deciding whether they will be among the eight players competing for the biggest prize at the end of the ATP season.
