Johann Zarco made an encouraging return to MotoGP action at the Aragon Grand Prix, finishing 10th on Friday and securing a place in Q2 qualifying on his first day back after a three-month injury absence.
The Castrol Honda LCR rider had been sidelined since suffering a left knee injury and spent the past three months focusing on his recovery. Despite the lengthy break from racing, Zarco showed little sign of rust as he immediately found his pace when he returned to the track.
Zarco admitted he was eager to get back on the bike and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly he felt comfortable.
“It’s been a good day. This morning I was surprised because I didn’t expect to be the first rider out on track. I could not wait,” Zarco said.
“From the first laps, immediately, the speed was there and it was really cool, very pleasant.”
The Frenchman quickly settled into a strong rhythm during the opening session, while also gaining valuable feedback on the Honda. He said the bike gave him a positive feeling and identified areas where further improvements could be made.
“I had a good feeling on the bike and I noticed different things. It’s a positive sign, and it means there are still some key areas we can work on to improve the bike,” he said.
Zarco’s physical condition was also a major focus given his extended absence. While he reported no pain in the injured leg, he said his muscles still needed time to adjust to the demands and riding position of a MotoGP machine.
“As for the leg, there’s no pain, but the muscles need some time to adapt to the position,” he explained.
“I’m taking care of my recovery after the sessions to feel as good as possible.”
Zarco continued to build momentum in the afternoon session, where the pace intensified. His performance was enough to secure 10th overall and, more importantly, a direct spot in Saturday’s Q2 qualifying session.
The result capped a highly encouraging first day back for the Honda LCR rider, who now has the opportunity to fight for a strong grid position.
“The pace in the afternoon was faster and more intense, and I thought, ‘Yes, we are back!’ It’s really cool to be in Q2 tomorrow. Let’s see what we can do!” Zarco said.
After three months away from competition, Zarco’s immediate return to the top 10 provides Honda LCR with plenty of reason for optimism heading into the rest of the Aragon weekend.
