Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is relishing his Ballon d'Or nomination as Georgia prepare to face Northern Ireland, with Michael O'Neill warning of the PSG star's match-winning threat.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is enjoying a career-defining moment after being named among the 30 nominees for the Ballon d'Or, with the Paris Saint-Germain winger now preparing to lead Georgia into their Nations League clash with Northern Ireland.

The 25-year-old has enjoyed a standout year, including being named Champions League Player of the Season for 2025-26, and will discover whether he can claim football's most prestigious individual prize when the winner is announced on October 26.

Key Highlights:

  • Khvicha Kvaratskhelia described his Ballon d'Or nomination as a major honour and said he is proud to represent Georgia.
  • The PSG star has been compared with Northern Irish legend George Best, a comparison he called a source of pride.
  • Michael O'Neill warned that Kvaratskhelia can change a game in an instant and said Northern Ireland must give him special attention.
  • Willy Sagnol praised Kvaratskhelia's humility and team-first mentality despite his growing individual recognition.

Kvaratskhelia Relishing Ballon d'Or Recognition

Kvaratskhelia has welcomed his place among the world's elite after being named on the 30-man Ballon d'Or shortlist. The Georgian winger believes the nomination reflects the progress he has made over the past year, particularly after his influential role in PSG's continental success.

"To be a Ballon d'Or contender, it's already a pleasure to be among these players in the race," Kvaratskhelia said. "I feel already that I did something special in the last year, I'm really happy and let's see what's gonna happen."

The 25-year-old also stressed what the recognition means beyond his own career, highlighting his pride in representing Georgia on the global stage.

"I'm happy that I represent Georgia, a small country," he added. "Little kids, they know that even if they are from a small country, they can achieve these things."

Kvaratskhelia Draws George Best Comparisons

The meeting with Northern Ireland has added another layer to Kvaratskhelia's growing profile, with comparisons between the PSG winger and George Best naturally resurfacing. Best remains Northern Ireland's only Ballon d'Or winner, having claimed the award in 1968, and Kvaratskhelia revealed that people have previously pointed to similarities between their playing styles.

"What about George Best? I know him, of course," Kvaratskhelia said. "Some people a long time ago told me even when I played it seems like him."

The Georgian admitted the comparison carries significant weight given Best's place in football history.

"I'm not sure because he was one of the best in football history and it [the comparison] is a pleasure and I'm proud," he added.

O'Neill Warns of Kvaratskhelia's Match-Winning Ability

Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill knows his team will have to pay close attention to Kvaratskhelia when the two nations meet. O'Neill drew a parallel between Best's impact on Northern Ireland and Kvaratskhelia's growing influence on Georgia, describing the PSG winger as a world-class player.

"George Best, an iconic figure in world football and obviously we're very privileged that he came from Northern Ireland. In many ways, he puts our country on the map," O'Neill said. "I think in Georgia, you have that situation now with Kvaratskhelia who I think is a world-class player."

O'Neill went further in assessing the winger's recent performances, saying he was "probably the best player in the Champions League last season over the whole competition." Northern Ireland will therefore have to give Kvaratskhelia "special attention", with O'Neill warning that a world-class player can "win the game in a moment" and create opportunities that lift an entire team.

Sagnol Praises Kvaratskhelia's Team-First Mentality

While Kvaratskhelia's individual reputation continues to grow, Georgia head coach Willy Sagnol believes his humility is just as important as his ability. Sagnol, who played alongside Zinedine Zidane for France, contrasted Kvaratskhelia's approach with the increasingly vocal individual claims surrounding the Ballon d'Or race.

"Too many times in the last weeks, I see players saying 'I'm the best, I'm the best, I'm the best'," Sagnol said.

Kvaratskhelia, he noted, has never taken that approach. "Khvicha never said that and that's why I'm very proud to be his head coach," Sagnol added. The Georgia boss believes the PSG star's character makes him more than just an exceptional footballer, praising his focus on the team rather than himself.

"He's not just about a fantastic football player, but he's also a fantastic personality who thinks always about the team and not about himself," Sagnol said.

With the Ballon d'Or nomination adding another milestone to his career, Kvaratskhelia now has the chance to show his qualities on the international stage when Georgia face Northern Ireland.
