Malaysia’s next generation of badminton talent will have a new platform to showcase their potential, with Datuk Seri Lee Chong Wei spearheading the inaugural Lee Chong Wei Cup.
The tournament is designed to identify promising young shuttlers and provide them with a potential pathway towards the national setup, giving aspiring players an opportunity to catch the attention of Malaysia’s coaches and selectors.
For Lee, a former world No. 1 and one of Malaysia’s greatest badminton players, the tournament represents a chance to give back to the sport by helping develop the country’s future stars.
The competition will introduce the 15x3 scoring system and feature five disciplines, including boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles. Events will be contested across the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 age groups, giving players from different stages of their development the chance to compete.
One of the biggest attractions of the tournament will be the opportunity for young players to put themselves in front of national coaches. Lee has urged both senior and junior coaches to attend the event, highlighting the possibility that standout performers could eventually earn opportunities with the national team.
“Players who perform well here could potentially earn a place in the national team,” Lee said.
The opportunity carries added significance given Lee’s own achievements. He spent 349 weeks as world No. 1 and won 69 BWF titles during his illustrious career, making him an influential figure for young Malaysians hoping to follow a similar path.
The Lee Chong Wei Cup has also attracted strong support from a number of major partners. Chery serves as the presenting partner, while Yonex Sunrise continues its long-standing involvement as an equipment sponsor.
