Lee Zii Jia's comeback continues to gather momentum after the Malaysian secured a place in the Australian Open main draw following a successful qualifying campaign in Sydney.
Currently ranked No. 64 in the world, the former All England champion had to navigate two challenging qualifying matches at the Quaycentre Arena to reach the tournament proper.
Zii Jia began his campaign with a narrow victory over Japan's Shogo Ogawa. The Malaysian held his nerve in a tightly contested encounter, edging past the world No. 72 by winning 24-22, 22-20 in 52 minutes.
He faced another stern test in the final qualifying round against Japan's Riki Takei. After dropping the opening game, Zii Jia responded strongly to complete a 15-21, 21-17, 21-16 comeback victory and seal his place in the main draw.
The result marks his second consecutive appearance in a tournament main draw and offers another positive sign as he works his way back up the world rankings.
Zii Jia's decision to skip the Malaysia Masters earlier this season was made with a longer-term schedule in mind, allowing him to focus on a series of international tournaments including the Australian Open. His successful qualification suggests that approach is beginning to yield results.
The Malaysian now faces a difficult opening-round test against Taiwan's Lee Chia Hao, the world No. 29, with a place in the second round at stake.
Malaysia will also have another qualifier in the men's singles main draw after Eogene Ewe successfully advanced through the preliminary rounds.
The world No. 77 came from a game down to defeat American player Mark Shelley Alcala 18-21, 21-13, 21-11 before producing an impressive 21-11, 21-18 victory over India's Manraj Singh to secure his place in the main draw.
Ewe's reward is a challenging first-round clash against Hong Kong's Lee Cheuk Yiu, who is ranked No. 23 in the world.
Not all Malaysian hopefuls enjoyed the same success. Lim Ming Hong fell short in the second qualifying round of the men's singles competition, while his mixed doubles campaign alongside Stella Pan also ended in defeat.
Despite those setbacks, the performances of Zii Jia and Ewe provided a welcome boost for Malaysia, with both players earning the opportunity to test themselves against higher-ranked opponents in the main draw.
