Lee Zii Jia has made a positive start to his Arctic Open campaign, securing his place in the main draw with a straight-game victory over Finland’s Kalle Koljonen.
The Malaysian, ranked No. 56 in the world, overcame the No. 66-ranked Koljonen 21-12, 21-15 at the Vantaa Energia Areena to move through the qualifying stage without much trouble.
The win provides a timely boost for the independent shuttler, who has been searching for greater consistency after a difficult recent run. At last month’s Vietnam Open Super 100, Zii Jia suffered a surprise second-round defeat to world No. 90 Wu Zhe Ying.

His performance in Finland offered a more encouraging response, with Zii Jia controlling the match against Koljonen and avoiding the kind of early setback that has affected him in recent tournaments.
The Arctic Open also carries added significance for the Malaysian, who returns as the defending champion after winning the Super 500 event in 2023.
Zii Jia will now turn his attention to the main draw, where he faces China’s world No. 40 Dong Tian Yao in the opening round on Wednesday.
The clash will provide a much stronger test of where Zii Jia stands as he looks to build on his confident start and make another deep run in Finland.
