Lee Zii Jia has made a strong start to his Arctic Open campaign, putting his recent disappointment behind him with a convincing qualifying victory in Vantaa, Finland.
The Malaysian, currently ranked No. 56 in the world, needed just 33 minutes to beat Finland’s world No. 46 Kalle Koljonen 21-12, 21-15 and book his place in the main draw.
The result offers an encouraging response after a difficult Vietnam Open campaign last month, where the former All England champion suffered a surprise second-round defeat to world No. 90 Wu Zhe Ying.
The disappointment was made harder to take when fellow Malaysian Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, ranked No. 105 at the time, went on to win the Vietnam Open title.
Zii Jia now has the opportunity to put that setback behind him, although his path in Finland will immediately become more difficult.
The Malaysian faces China’s world No. 40 Dong Tian Yao in the opening round of the main draw. The two last met in the Orleans Masters qualifiers in March, when Dong came out on top.
That gives Zii Jia another chance to turn the tables while testing whether his strong qualifying performance can translate into a deeper run.
There is also added significance for the Malaysian, who lifted the Arctic Open title in 2023. A return to winning form in Vantaa would provide a timely boost as he looks to rebuild his momentum on the international circuit.
Malaysia will also have plenty of interest in the men’s doubles draw.
An all-Malaysian clash will see the scratch pairing of Aaron Tai and Yap Roy King take on world No. 24 Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub and Tan Wee Kiong in the first round.
Meanwhile, world No. 72 Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi will begin their campaign against Lithuania’s Danielius Berzanskis and Domas Paksys.
For Zii Jia, however, the spotlight remains firmly on his singles campaign. After a clean start in the qualifiers, the former Arctic Open champion now faces an immediate test against Dong Tian Yao, with the Malaysian hoping his return to Finland can mark the beginning of a much-needed revival.
