When a superstar returns to his roots, magic happens – and that's precisely what's unfolding at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) right now. Lee Zii Jia, a beacon of Malaysian badminton, isn't just preparing for the upcoming Thomas Cup; he's actively igniting the spark in the nation's next generation of shuttlers. His presence is a powerful boost, far beyond just the main squad.
Key Points:
- Lee Zii Jia is training intensely with the Thomas Cup squad at ABM.
- His presence is hugely inspiring young, backup Malaysian shuttlers.
- National assistant coach K. Yogendran highlights the significant positive impact and learning opportunities.
- Zii Jia is demonstrating full commitment, giving 100% in his pre-Thomas Cup preparations.
The Return of a Prodigy: Zii Jia's Electric Impact
The buzz at ABM is palpable, and much of it stems from the sheer presence of Lee Zii Jia. National assistant men's singles coach K. Yogendran can barely contain his excitement, revealing how Zii Jia's training sessions are far more than just practice; they're a masterclass for the aspiring talents.
"Our back-up players were incredibly excited because many had never played with Zii Jia before," Yogendran enthused. This rare opportunity to train alongside an Olympic medallist has clearly left a profound mark on the younger athletes.
Sparks Fly on Court: Learning from a Legend
Zii Jia, at 28, plunged into intense match-play and sparring sessions, joined by fellow Thomas Cup hopeful Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin and former national shuttler Cheam June Wei. But the real story unfolded with the younger guard.
Players like Eogene Ewe and rising junior Kong Wei Xiang seized the chance to spar directly with Zii Jia. Others watched, mesmerized, from the sidelines, absorbing every movement, every strategy, every nuance of a top-tier athlete.
"I could see our 18- and 19-year-olds admiring him and trying to learn something," Yogendran explained. "They are incredibly positive when he's around. Seeing an Olympic medallist here – how he warms up, how he prepares – it has truly lifted them."
This isn't just about skill transfer; it's about intangible inspiration. It benefits everyone involved, especially the future of Malaysian badminton, by providing invaluable real-world experience and motivation.
Thomas Cup Countdown: Intense Preparations Underway
With national coaching director Kenneth Jonassen and men's singles coach Tey Seu Bock currently at the Badminton Asia Championships, Yogendran has stepped up to oversee Zii Jia's rigorous program, coordinating closely with his coach Liew Daren.
"He is giving his best," Yogendran confirmed, having already updated the senior coaches on Zii Jia's progress. "So far, we've had two sessions, and in both, he has given 100 per cent. It's a great environment; we're working as a team and supporting each other. The program has gone smoothly."
Lee Zii Jia is set to continue his high-octane training at ABM before joining the national squad for their final training camp in Herning, Denmark, commencing April 15. This intense preparation is all geared towards peak performance at the Thomas Cup in Horsens, Denmark, from April 24-May 3. Fans eagerly await the official Thomas and Uber Cup squad announcement, expected shortly.
