Leong Jun Hao kept Malaysia's men's singles challenge alive at the China Open and will next face China's Wang Hong Yang for a place in the quarter-finals.

Leong Jun Hao remains Malaysia's sole representative in the men's singles draw at the China Open after booking his place in the second round with a composed victory over Japan's Yushi Tanaka.

The world No. 25 produced a confident display to defeat Tanaka 21-18, 21-15, setting up a last-16 meeting with China's Wang Hong Yang, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Jun Hao heads into the match with momentum after enjoying one of the best spells of his career. He recently reached the semi-finals of the Japan Open, where he claimed notable victories over higher-ranked opponents before eventually falling to world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi.

The Malaysian will be aiming to continue that impressive form against Hong Yang, who is expected to pose a stern challenge on home soil.

Jun Hao holds a slight psychological edge after winning their only previous meeting at the Korea Masters in 2024, although the Chinese shuttler has shown improved consistency this season and will have home support behind him.

A quarter-final appearance would further strengthen Jun Hao's recent resurgence and provide another valuable boost to his world ranking ahead of a busy second half of the season.

Malaysia's challenge in the men's singles draw has otherwise come to an end after Ng Tze Yong and Justin Hoh were eliminated earlier in the tournament, leaving Jun Hao carrying the nation's hopes in the discipline.

With confidence growing after his strong performances in recent weeks, the 25-year-old now has an opportunity to continue his impressive run and reach the last eight of a Super 1000 event for the first time in his career.
