KUALA LUMPUR: Only six out of 13 Malaysian representatives advanced in the Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) individual competition in Yatsushiro, Japan, on Wednesday.

Malaysia's rising badminton talents navigated a demanding day at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) in Yatsushiro, Japan, with only six out of thirteen representatives securing their spots in the next round of individual competition. While some stars shone brightly, others faced premature exits, highlighting the intense pressure of continental junior play.

  • Only six of Malaysia's thirteen junior shuttlers advanced to the next stage.
  • Boys' singles was Malaysia's strongest category, with three players progressing.
  • Second seeds Ahmad Redzuan-Low Zi Yu kept Malaysia's mixed doubles hopes alive.
  • Girls' singles saw a clean sweep of early eliminations for the Malaysian contingent.

A Day of Mixed Fortunes in Japan

The individual competition at the Yatsushiro City General Gymnasium proved to be a true test for the Malaysian squad. Despite strong performances from a select few, the overall showing was a stark reminder of the global talent pool in junior badminton.

Boys' Singles: A Beacon of Promise

The boys' singles contingent delivered the most consistent results for Malaysia. Lucas Lee battled through a tight second game to defeat India's G. Abhinav 21-13, 24-22. He now faces South Korea's Jeon Woo Ju in a challenging upcoming clash.

Meanwhile, Tiew Wei Jie showcased his dominance, dispatching Vietnam's Lo Trieu Huy 21-9, 21-12. His next opponent will be Singapore's Zack Ng. The day's most emphatic victory came from eighth seed Kong Wei Xiang, who overwhelmed Uzbekistan's Azizbek Lutfullaev 21-8, 21-8. Wei Xiang is set to meet Thailand's Pramat Pumleng, aiming to continue his commanding form.

Unfortunately, Chong Lee Qian couldn't join his teammates, falling to China's Ji Ning Xu in a close 21-14, 25-23 encounter.

Mixed Doubles: Upset and Survival

The mixed doubles draw brought both triumph and heartbreak. Second seeds Ahmad Redzuan Zulwaqqarizal Ahmad and Low Zi Yu lived up to their billing, smoothly overcoming Japan's Atsuharu Isoda and Rio Yamakita 21-10, 21-13. Their strong performance keeps Malaysia's hopes alive in this category.

However, the competition saw a significant upset with fourth seeds Irfan Shazmir and Nur Aina Maisarah Hatta bowing out to Taiwan's Huang Tzu Yuan and Han Chen 21-14, 21-12. Fellow Malaysian pairs Khairul Azlan Khashah-Teh Si Yan and Isyraf Hafizin Ibrahim-Joinne Lee also faced early exits, underlining the category's intense competition.

Doubles Teams Fight On

In boys' doubles, Ethan Oh and Wan Hadelee Darwisy secured their progression with a solid 21-17, 21-16 win over India's A. Divyansh and K. Amrajit Singh. Their next challenge comes against Taiwan's Chen Yi Hsuan and Chu Chun Yen.

The girls' doubles pair of Joinne Lee and Tan Xin Yu also delivered a convincing performance, beating Macau's Chan Hao Wai and Ung Cheok Ian 21-10, 21-12. They are now set to face Indonesia's Atresia and Aurelia Syakira Putri.

Girls' Singles Face Early Exit

The girls' singles proved to be the toughest category for Malaysia. All three representatives — Ong Xin Ru, Lee Kay Xin, and Lee Mun — were eliminated in straight games. Xin Ru lost to Taiwan's Su Xiao Ting 21-14, 21-10, Kay Xin fell to India's B. B. Adarshini Shri 21-12, 21-12, and Lee Mun was defeated by China's Sun Li Yuan 21-12, 21-13. These early exits highlight areas for future development.
