Man Wei Chong has chosen therapy over knee surgery as he targets a return for the World Championships in August, although he and Tee Kai Wun will miss the upcoming Malaysia Masters, Singapore Open and Indonesia Open.

Malaysia men’s doubles player Man Wei Chong has decided to undergo therapy for his knee injury instead of immediate surgery, offering hope of a quicker return to competition.

There had initially been expectations that the World No. 6 shuttler would require surgery on his right knee, with partner Tee Kai Wun confirming earlier this week that surgery was being considered. However, national men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi said doctors have now advised a conservative recovery plan focused on intensive rehabilitation, with surgery only viewed as a final option.

The decision means Wei Chong and Kai Wun will miss the Malaysia Masters, Singapore Open from May 26-31, and Indonesia Open from June 2-7 as the pair focus fully on recovery.

Their absence will affect their momentum and ranking points, but the priority remains getting Wei Chong back to full fitness ahead of the World Championships in New Delhi from Aug 17-23. The three-month recovery window is seen as enough time for the pair to prepare for one of the biggest tournaments of the season.

Meanwhile, Kai Wun is expected to remain active during his partner’s absence. Herry revealed that discussions are ongoing about temporary pairings to keep the player match-fit and competitive.

Kai Wun has already shown his adaptability at the recent Thomas Cup in Horsens, where he partnered both Soh Wooi Yik and Aaron Chia during the group stage.

Among the players who could partner Kai Wun in upcoming tournaments are rising shuttlers Choong Hon Jian, Haikal Nazri and Goh Boon Sze as Malaysia continue exploring options while waiting for Wei Chong’s return.
