A Star is Born: Meerdink's Unforgettable Oranje Debut
Xavi Hernández made a bold call, thrusting Mexx Meerdink into the starting XI due to Brian Brobbey's injury. It paid off spectacularly. This UEFA Nations League clash at the Rajko Mitic Stadium became a stage for a true breakout performance for the Netherlands.
The young striker, usually a substitute, looked anything but inexperienced. His confidence was evident from the whistle, setting the tone for an incredible night in Belgrade.
Ice in His Veins: The Debut Double
The Oranje faithful didn't have to wait long for the first moment of magic. When Crysencio Summerville was fouled, Meerdink stepped up for the penalty with remarkable composure. He coolly dispatched it, opening the scoring and silencing the home crowd.
Serbia's Luka Jović briefly threatened to spoil the party with an early second-half equalizer. However, Meerdink wasn't finished. In the 78th minute, he converted Guus Til's pass with a perfectly timed sliding finish, restoring the lead and sealing the 2-1 win for the Netherlands.
Beyond the Goals: Meerdink's Relentless Engine
Manager Xavi Hernández wasn't just impressed by the goals; he lauded Meerdink's relentless work ethic. The AZ forward constantly pressed Serbia's defenders, disrupting their rhythm and linking play seamlessly with midfielders like Joey Veerman and Guus Til.
This all-around performance solidified his place as a vital attacking outlet. Xavi even confirmed Meerdink is now the designated second penalty taker, a testament to the trust placed in him by the Netherlands coaching staff.
