Linda Noskova produced another composed performance at Wimbledon to defeat Elise Mertens 6-3, 7-5 and reach the first Grand Slam semi-final of her career.
The 21-year-old Czech controlled much of the quarter-final with aggressive returning and confident baseline play, sealing victory in one hour and 37 minutes to continue her impressive run at the All England Club.
Noskova made the brighter start, breaking Mertens once to take the opening set before maintaining her momentum in the second. Although the Belgian fought hard to stay in contention, Noskova found another timely break at 5-5 before serving out the match with authority. She finished with seven aces and won nearly 79 per cent of points behind her first serve, underlining her dominance throughout the contest.
The victory marks another milestone in Noskova's rapid rise. After reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, she has now advanced to her first major semi-final and becomes the youngest Czech woman to reach the last four at the Championships since Petra Kvitova.
Speaking after the match, Noskova said the achievement was special, adding that she had drawn inspiration from the long tradition of successful Czech women at Wimbledon. Recent champions Marketa Vondrousova and Barbora Krejcikova, along with two-time winner Petra Kvitova, have all helped shape that legacy.
Despite the straight-sets scoreline, Mertens made Noskova work throughout the encounter. The Belgian saved nine break points and remained within striking distance until the closing stages of the second set, but she was unable to convert her only break point opportunity of the match.
Noskova will next face Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk in the semi-finals, with both players aiming to reach their first Grand Slam final. The matchup guarantees that one of the tour's rising stars will compete for the Wimbledon title this weekend.
