Rafael Jodar rallied past Botic van de Zandschulp for his third consecutive comeback win at the Shanghai Masters, keeping his ATP Finals hopes alive. He will next face Casper Ruud, who reached the quarter-finals at all nine Masters 1000 tournaments for the first time in his career.

Rafael Jodar continued his impressive run at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, recovering from another first-set loss to defeat Botic van de Zandschulp and reach the quarter-finals. The 20-year-old Spaniard won 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 30 minutes, recording his third consecutive comeback victory at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

Jodar had previously rallied from a set down against Thiago Agustin Tirante and Jiri Lehecka. Making his Shanghai debut, the young Spaniard has shown remarkable resilience as he looks to make a late push for qualification to the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

Reflecting on his latest win, Jodar acknowledged that his opponent had handled the key moments better in the opening-set tie-break.

"I think I was doing the right things, but he played important points in the tie-break better than me. Very happy with how the match went today," he said.

His consistent performances have strengthened his position in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, where he sits 11th, just 131 points behind Novak Djokovic. With a 41-16 win-loss record for the season, Jodar is enjoying a strong campaign in his first full year competing on the ATP Tour.

However, he faces another major test in the quarter-finals against Casper Ruud, who advanced after Felix Auger-Aliassime retired with a knee injury while trailing 5-2 in their fourth-round match.

Ruud expressed sympathy for his opponent, suggesting that the injury may have occurred during an early exchange near the net.

"I think he was ready at the start and it seemed to me that he kind of twisted something over at the net in the third or fourth game," the Norwegian said.

"It's small margins in this sport, and unluckily for Felix it goes against him today. I hope he heals quick."

Although Ruud's progression came under unfortunate circumstances, reaching the last eight marked a significant milestone in his career. The 27-year-old has now reached the quarter-finals at all nine ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, completing the full set of appearances at that stage.

He joins an accomplished group of active players to have achieved the feat, including Djokovic, Marin Cilic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, Andrey Rublev, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Jannik Sinner and Auger-Aliassime.

Ruud's experience and milestone achievement set up an intriguing quarter-final clash with Jodar, whose confidence has grown with every comeback win. While the Spaniard will look to continue his impressive run and strengthen his bid for the ATP Finals, Ruud will aim to build on his progress and move closer to the Shanghai title.

With both players chasing a place in the semi-finals, their meeting promises a compelling contest between an emerging talent and an established tour contender.
