Malaysia’s women’s doubles player Tan Zhing Yi has been ruled out of the Asian Team Championships in Qingdao after an MRI revealed a muscle tear in her right leg. Her partner Cheng Su Hui’s pairing is yet to be decided as the team awaits further medical advice.

Malaysia’s national women’s doubles player Tan Zhing Yi will miss the Asian Team Championships in Qingdao, China, which begin next Tuesday, after sustaining a muscle tear in her right leg.

National women’s doubles head coach Rosman Razak confirmed that an MRI scan on Tuesday revealed the injury. Tan Zhing Yi was hurt while playing alongside partner Cheng Su Hui at last week’s Indonesian Masters, where the pair had to withdraw from their second-round match against Taiwan’s Hsu Ya-ching and Sung Yu-hsuan, handing their opponents a walkover.

To allow for proper treatment and recovery, the duo also pulled out of this week’s Thailand Masters in Bangkok.

Rosman explained that while surgery is not currently required, the decision could change depending on a second MRI scan. He could not provide a definite timeline for Tan Zhing Yi’s return and said the team has not yet decided who will partner Cheng Su Hui for the upcoming championship.

“We are waiting for the second MRI and recommendations from the physiotherapy team regarding the recovery period. Only then can we decide whether to change the pairing or try another combination,” Rosman said.

Apart from the Zhing Yi-Su Hui pairing, Malaysia will field Carmen Ting and Ong Xin Yee as well as Chong Jie Yu and Vanessa Ng in the women’s doubles event. The singles line-up will include K. Letshanaa, Wong Ling Ching, Siti Zulaikha Azmi, and Oo Shan Zhi.

Malaysia has already secured a place in the quarter-finals despite being drawn against hosts China in Group W. Only the top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage, giving the national squad some reassurance ahead of the tournament.
