Chen Tang Jie and Chan Wen Tse made a winning return as a mixed doubles pairing at the Arctic Open, defeating fellow Malaysians Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing in straight games in Vantaa.
The temporary partnership produced an impressive 21-15, 21-16 victory in just 35 minutes, sending Tang Jie and Wen Tse into the next round of the Super 500 tournament.
Their opponents were no pushovers, with Pang Ron and Pei Jing having recently reached the China Masters final. However, the reunited Malaysians quickly found their rhythm and controlled the match from the opening game.
The victory is particularly significant for Tang Jie, who is currently without his regular partner Toh Ee Wei as she continues her recovery from a long-term ACL injury.
With Ee Wei sidelined, the Malaysian coaching setup has been exploring temporary options to ensure Tang Jie remains active and competitive on the international circuit. Wen Tse has emerged as one of those options, having previously partnered Tang Jie during experimental stints.
The pair also teamed up twice last year, reaching the semi-finals of the Taiwan Open before suffering an early exit at the Malaysia Masters.
Their latest reunion has now given them another opportunity to develop their understanding on court, although their next assignment will provide a much tougher test.
Tang Jie and Wen Tse will face China’s top seeds Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping in the next round. The Chinese pair began their campaign with a dominant 21-11, 21-9 victory over Denmark’s Jesper Toft and Amalie Cecilie Kudsk.
The clash will offer Tang Jie and Wen Tse an immediate test against one of the strongest combinations in the draw and a chance to measure how far their renewed partnership can go.
Elsewhere, Malaysia also recorded mixed results in the mixed doubles.
Jimmy Wong and Cheng Su Yin progressed after beating Sweden’s Oscar Reuterhall and Nathalie Wang 21-12, 21-16.
Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien, however, saw their campaign end in the opening round after losing 21-15, 21-18 to China’s fifth seeds Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui.
For Tang Jie and Wen Tse, the priority now is to build on their impressive opening performance. With Ee Wei continuing her rehabilitation, every successful outing gives Malaysia more information about whether this temporary partnership can provide Tang Jie with a competitive option in the months ahead.
