Italian teenager Federico Cinà delivered a breakthrough moment at Roland Garros after claiming a memorable five-set win in his Grand Slam main draw debut.
The 19-year-old defeated American giant Reilly Opelka 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-4 in a gripping first-round clash that lasted three hours and 26 minutes. With the result, Cinà became the first male player born in 2007 to win a main draw match at a Grand Slam tournament.
It marked another milestone in the young Italian’s rapid rise. Earlier this year, Cinà had already made history by becoming the first player from the 2007 generation to win a match at an ATP Masters 1000 event during the Miami Open.
Playing in just his third attempt at Grand Slam qualifying, Cinà showed impressive composure throughout a physically demanding encounter against Opelka, one of the biggest servers on tour. After surrendering a 4-1 advantage in the fourth-set tiebreak, the Italian quickly regrouped and broke Opelka early in the deciding set.
The biggest test came while serving for the match. Cinà fell behind 0-40 but held his nerve to close out the victory in front of a lively Paris crowd.
“I took it point by point,” Cinà said after the match. “I tried not to think too much about the score and stayed focused on every point.”
The hot conditions in Paris also appeared to work in his favour. Coming from Palermo in southern Italy, Cinà admitted he feels comfortable playing in high temperatures, an advantage during the demanding clay-court battle.
Despite making his Grand Slam breakthrough on clay, the teenager has already shown strong potential across different surfaces. He reached three ATP Challenger finals before Roland Garros and captured the biggest title of his young career in Pune earlier this season.
Currently ranked world No. 238, Cinà is expected to make another significant jump in the ATP rankings following his Paris breakthrough, surpassing his previous career-high of No. 183.
His reward could be a blockbuster second-round meeting with former Roland Garros champion Stan Wawrinka, a matchup that would offer another major test for one of tennis’ fastest-rising young talents.
