Malaysia's emerging women's doubles pair Low Zi Yu and Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan produced another statement victory on the international stage after upsetting a top-10 ranked duo in the opening round of the Australian Open in Sydney.
The young Malaysians battled for 70 minutes before defeating Taiwan's world No. 8 pair Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En Tzu 21-19, 13-21, 21-19 at the Quaycentre to advance to the second round.
The result continues an impressive year for the partnership, which has already shown it can compete with some of the world's best. Earlier this season, the pair claimed a breakthrough victory over Japan's world No. 7 combination Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi during the Uber Cup in Denmark.
Their latest success was particularly satisfying as it avenged a straight-games defeat to the Taiwanese pair at the Badminton Asia Championships earlier this year.
At just 15 years old, Zi Yu continues to attract attention as one of Malaysia's brightest young prospects, while Noraqilah, 19, has played a key role in the pair's rapid development on the senior circuit.
With confidence growing, the Malaysians will now look to extend their run when they face an Australian pair in the next round. Their opponents will be either Jazmine Lam and Lim Yee Yuan or Sai Tanvi Mushini and Ava Wong.
Meanwhile, there was also good news in the men's doubles event as Chia Wei Jie and Teo Ee Yi secured their place in the second round.
The Malaysian duo, ranked world No. 152, defeated Indonesia's Muh Putra Erwiansyah and Bagas Maulana 21-18, 23-21 in a closely contested 45-minute match.
Wei Jie and Ee Yi will next take on a Taiwanese pair, with either Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi Lin or Chen Cheng Kuan and Liu Kuang Heng awaiting them in the last 16.
While Malaysia's established stars often dominate the headlines, the performances of Zi Yu and Noraqilah in Sydney offer another encouraging sign for the country's future. Their ability to challenge and defeat top-ranked opponents at such a young age suggests they could become a major force in women's doubles in the years ahead.
