Kompany’s Collapse Linked to Meningeal Irritation

Kompany was discharged from hospital on Wednesday, five days after he became unwell at Bayern Munich’s Säbener Strasse headquarters. According to The Athletic, he had been watching a training session involving Bayern’s second team when the incident occurred, following a viral infection he had been dealing with over the previous week.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl has since clarified that Kompany was diagnosed with meningeal irritation. According to medical platform ebm.one, meningism refers to irritation of the meninges, the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, without the other features associated with meningitis.

Eberl Confident Kompany Will Make a Full Recovery

Speaking on Wednesday ahead of Bayern’s DFB-Pokal clash against second-tier Magdeburg, Eberl provided an update on the manager’s condition and welcomed his discharge from hospital.

"To be honest, he's doing well, considering the circumstances… I wouldn't say very well, but he's doing well. He was discharged from the hospital today. That's the biggest and best news for all of us," Eberl said.

He also confirmed that doctors had identified the cause of Kompany’s collapse and expressed confidence that the Bayern boss would soon return to full fitness.

"They have found what it is: It's meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. But I'm sure he'll be back at 100 per cent very soon, able to go home and do his rehab at home," Eberl added.

Kompany Admits He Ignored Signs of Illness

Kompany previously discussed his illness following Bayern’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Arsenal last Wednesday, explaining that he had continued working despite suffering from a severe viral infection.

"As a coach, you always want to do everything and accomplish what you can. I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body, so at some point it just said, 'Stop now!'" he told Bild.

Alongside the viral infection, the former defender has also been managing a hip injury that has affected his mobility. During recent matches against RB Leipzig and Arsenal, he made only occasional visits to the technical area and spent most of the time seated in the dugout.

No Return Date Yet as Bayern Prepare for Dortmund Clash

Bayern Munich have not announced a specific timeline for Kompany’s return, with his recovery determining when he can resume his duties. In the meantime, assistant coaches Aaron Danks and Rene Maric will continue overseeing the first team.

After the DFB-Pokal match against Magdeburg, Bayern are scheduled to host Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Both teams have 17 points at the top of the Bundesliga, adding significance to the upcoming encounter. Bayern will then travel to face Atletico Madrid in the Champions League three days later, leaving the team with a demanding schedule while Kompany continues his recovery.
