Every reigning women’s singles champion is traditionally given the honour of opening Centre Court play on Day 2, stepping out beneath the Royal Box at Wimbledon.
Defending champion Iga Swiatek walked onto Centre Court in her trademark focused style—headphones on and cap pulled low—to begin her title defence against American Taylor Townsend. The moment took place in front of Royal Box guests including Lady Rose Gilman, alongside Swiatek’s father Tomasz and sister Agata, who were present to witness her champion’s reception.

Centre Court Transformed Into a Theatrical Stage
Centre Court’s presentation once again stood out as one of sport’s most visually striking arenas, from its signature green masonry paint (Permaglaze Spruce Green, code 14C39) to the meticulously maintained 8mm grass and precision-cut 50mm white lines.
The Royal Box atmosphere matched the spectacle, with guests such as Lady Rose Gilman—who has experience in film and TV art departments including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix—among those observing the unfolding drama.
Film, Theatre and Music Stars Add to the Atmosphere
A wide mix of entertainment figures added to the occasion’s glamour. Actress Fiona Shaw, known for both classical stage work and Harry Potter, and Celia Imrie, famed for roles in Bridget Jones, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, represented a range of artistic presence in the Royal Box.
Imrie also featured in the film adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club, whose author Richard Osman was in attendance. Musical figures included Alfie Boe, Jamie Cullum, and Mollie King, who attended alongside her husband, former England cricketer Stuart Broad.
Serena Williams Headlines Emotional Return
The third match of the day brought another major moment as Serena Williams, holder of 13 Wimbledon titles, made an emotional return to Centre Court four years after her last singles appearance.
She was supported by a family presence in her entourage, while former US Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe was among those applauding her comeback. The return was described as a significant personal feat, with Williams continuing her journey as one of tennis’s most iconic figures.
Royal Box Guests Span Sport, Science, and Public Service
Royal Box host Deborah Jevans welcomed guests from a wide range of fields, reflecting Wimbledon’s tradition of recognising contributors beyond sport.
Among them were figures from national security, medicine, defence, and academia, including Professor Ciaran Martin of the National Cyber Security Centre, Air Marshal Sir Paul Lloyd, Professor Peter Mortimer, and Sir John Bell of Oxford University.
Others included community leaders such as Johnny Mooney of Tooting Community Kitchen, Jon Featherstone of Wimbledon Foodbank, and Ken Weatherley, All England Club Vice-President awarded an MBE for charitable work. Also present was The Reverend Mandy Hodgson of St Mary’s Church, Wimbledon.
