MotoGP’s rider market has erupted, with Yamaha confirming Jorge Martin as its factory rider from the 2027 season, just hours after Fabio Quartararo’s shock decision to leave for Honda.
The back-to-back announcements mark a major shift in the competitive landscape. Quartararo’s departure left Yamaha facing a potential leadership vacuum, but the Japanese manufacturer moved swiftly to secure one of the grid’s most sought-after talents.
Martin, known for his aggressive style and race-winning pace, will lead Yamaha’s factory project at the age of 29. The Spaniard arrives with extensive experience across multiple manufacturers, having made his name with Pramac Ducati before committing to Aprilia for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Yamaha will be the third factory bike he rides in four years, underlining both his ambition and market value.
Yamaha’s decision reflects a clear strategic reset after several difficult seasons. Rather than waiting for the market to develop, the Iwata-based team has placed its long-term future in the hands of a proven title contender, signaling its intent to return to the front of MotoGP.

Martin’s move follows a complicated path. After Ducati promoted Marc Marquez for 2025, Martin signed a two-year deal with Aprilia, which also blocked a potential switch to Honda for 2026. The unexpected opening at Yamaha has now reshaped those plans, cutting short his projected stay with the Italian manufacturer.
The 2024 season was a difficult one for Martin, disrupted by injuries that limited him to just seven races. He is currently recovering from surgeries on his left scaphoid and right collarbone following a crash at the Japanese Grand Prix and will miss the upcoming Sepang test. Aprilia test rider Lorenzo Savadori will step in alongside Marco Bezzecchi as Martin continues his rehabilitation.
Attention now turns to the other side of the Yamaha garage. Alex Rins faces growing pressure to deliver stronger results in 2025 and 2026 if he hopes to secure his future with the team beyond the end of his current contract.
With Yamaha locking in Martin and Quartararo heading to Honda, the 2027 grid is already taking shape, and the latest moves suggest the rider market turbulence is far from over.
