Promising Malaysian youngsters Chang Zi Yu and Nurshuhaini Noraqilah are being encouraged to develop stronger mental resilience as they continue navigating the growing expectations surrounding their careers.
Both players have attracted attention with encouraging performances and visible potential, but coaches believe handling pressure will now become just as important as improving technical ability on court.
The pair are currently going through an important stage of development where expectations from fans, coaches, and even themselves are beginning to increase. While talent is not in doubt, adapting mentally to tougher competition and higher standards remains a key challenge for young athletes.
Malaysia’s coaching staff stressed that setbacks and inconsistent performances are part of the learning process, particularly for players still adjusting to senior-level badminton. Rather than focusing too heavily on immediate results, the priority is to help them grow steadily and gain valuable experience.
There is also recognition that young players often face greater scrutiny after producing strong early performances. Maintaining composure and confidence under pressure can therefore become difficult, especially during tight matches and major tournaments.
Despite the recent challenges, coaches remain optimistic about both players’ futures and believe they possess the qualities needed to succeed at higher levels if they continue developing patiently.
The national setup has increasingly focused on mental preparation alongside physical training and tactical improvement, recognising the psychological demands of modern badminton competition.
Zi Yu and Noraqilah are viewed as part of Malaysia’s next generation of talent, and the hope is that exposure to tougher international tournaments will help accelerate their growth both mentally and technically.
As they continue gaining experience, the emphasis will remain on learning how to manage expectations, stay composed during difficult moments, and gradually build the consistency needed to compete with the world’s best.
