Alexander Zverev battled through physical discomfort to defeat Alexander Bublik in a tense three-set encounter at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Tuesday, advancing to the quarter-finals with a 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1) victory.
The German top seed needed two hours and 41 minutes to overcome Bublik, saving four set points in the opening set before taking control in the deciding tie-break. The win marked Zverev’s first match since he secured the 2026 year-end world No. 1 ranking, which was confirmed after Carlos Alcaraz suffered an early exit in Shanghai.
Zverev admitted that his ankle was troubling him during the match, particularly as the contest progressed. Despite the discomfort, he managed to stay competitive against Bublik, who pushed him through two tie-breaks and forced a deciding set by winning the second 6-4.
The final set remained closely contested, but Zverev raised his level when it mattered most. He raced to a 6-1 lead in the tie-break before sealing the victory with an ace.
“My ankle was acting up, unfortunately,” Zverev said after the match, adding that the physical issues had affected his movement. Nevertheless, he was pleased to get through a difficult challenge against an opponent who had been playing well throughout the tournament.
The victory sent Zverev into the Shanghai quarter-finals for the first time since 2019 and marked his 40th appearance in the last eight of an ATP Masters 1000 event. He will next face Australia’s Alex de Minaur, who defeated Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4 to advance.
Zverev is now aiming to build on a landmark season that has seen him win two Grand Slam titles and secure the year-end No. 1 honour for the first time. However, his latest performance also highlighted the physical demands of his campaign as he looks to continue his Shanghai run.
