Alexander Zverev is ready to embrace the responsibility of finishing the year as the world's top-ranked men's tennis player after securing the ATP Year-End No. 1 honour for the first time in his career.
The German celebrated the milestone with a hard-fought victory over Alexander Bublik at the Rolex Shanghai Masters on Tuesday, winning 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(1) to reach the quarter-finals.
Zverev's year-end achievement was confirmed after Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock defeat to Zizou Bergs on Monday. The result ensured that Zverev would finish the 2026 season at the top of the ATP rankings, making him the first German player to achieve the feat.
Speaking after his victory over Bublik, Zverev described the honour as special, explaining that finishing the year as world No. 1 carries a different meaning from winning an individual tournament.
The 29-year-old also welcomed the responsibility that comes with the distinction, viewing it as another important step in his career.
Although the milestone provided plenty of reason to celebrate, Zverev still had to work hard to advance in Shanghai. Bublik pushed him through three demanding sets, forcing the German to rely on his composure during two tie-breaks.
Zverev admitted that physical issues affected his performance, with his ankle causing further discomfort as the match progressed. Despite struggling at times, he managed to regain control in the deciding tie-break, winning it convincingly to seal the victory.
The win continued an impressive season for Zverev, who claimed his first two Grand Slam titles at Roland Garros and the US Open in 2026. His consistent results throughout the year have now earned him the sport's most prestigious year-end ranking distinction.
However, the German's focus will quickly return to the court as he prepares for his Shanghai quarter-final against Alex de Minaur. With his year-end No. 1 status secured, Zverev can now concentrate on adding another Masters 1000 title to an already remarkable season.
