MotoGP legend Giacomo Agostini has challenged claims that Marc Márquez is already the greatest rider of all time, saying the debate should remain open despite the Spaniard’s record-breaking success.

MotoGP icon Giacomo Agostini has dismissed growing claims from experts and fans that Marc Márquez should already be considered the greatest rider in the sport’s history, arguing that such comparisons cannot be made so definitively.

Agostini, an eight-time premier class world champion and one of the most decorated riders in motorcycle racing history, believes the “greatest of all time” discussion is far more complex than recent performances suggest. He emphasised that different eras of MotoGP cannot be directly compared due to changes in machinery, competition level, and racing conditions.

Márquez has been widely praised in recent seasons following his return to championship-winning form, including his 2025 MotoGP title with Ducati. His record places him among the most successful riders in modern history, with multiple world championships and a strong winning rate in the premier class.

Despite this, Agostini maintains that historical context matters. He pointed to the dominance of past champions across different eras, noting that riders like himself achieved success under very different technical conditions, with far less electronic assistance and simpler machinery.

The debate has intensified as Márquez continues to close in on long-standing records held by Agostini and other legends. However, Agostini has repeatedly urged caution when comparing riders across generations, stressing that statistics alone do not define greatness.

At the same time, Agostini has shown respect for Márquez’s achievements and resilience, particularly after his comeback from injury setbacks. He has previously acknowledged the Spaniard’s talent and ability to adapt, even while resisting direct comparisons to past champions.

As Márquez continues his career at the front of MotoGP, the discussion over where he stands in the sport’s all-time rankings remains open, with opinions divided between statistical dominance and historical context.
