Cal Crutchlow's encouraging Sachsenring Grand Prix came to an unfortunate end after the Castrol Honda LCR replacement rider crashed while fighting for a points finish.
The British rider made a strong start and was involved in several close battles before settling into a steady rhythm. Running in 15th place and within the points, Crutchlow was pushing to improve his position when he crashed at Turn 3 with eight laps remaining.
"I had some problems during the race. In the end, I made a mistake and crashed," said Crutchlow.
Although his race ended early, Crutchlow took positives from the weekend after showing improved pace and closing the gap to the riders ahead throughout each session.
"Still, I really enjoyed battling with some of the other riders. That was great," he added.
Crutchlow walked away from the crash unhurt and believes the weekend marked another step forward in his return to MotoGP.
"Overall, we can be pleased with the performance. I gained more track speed, improved the feeling with the bike and, most importantly, got more valuable track time. I'll always prefer crashing while fighting for positions than finishing the race at the back."
Despite missing out on points, Crutchlow's pace and growing confidence throughout the weekend provided further signs of progress as he continues to rebuild his race form.
