Malaysian shuttler Cheam June Wei suffered another early exit at the Hylo Open, losing to India’s Kiran George in straight games despite his impressive record at the Lin Dan Cup.

Malaysian independent shuttler Cheam June Wei is still searching for consistency on the international circuit after suffering an early exit at the Hylo Open in Germany.

The world No. 57 was beaten 21-18, 21-17 by India’s world No. 55 Kiran George at the Saarlandhalle in Saarbrucken. The match lasted just 35 minutes, handing June Wei another disappointing result on the World Tour.

The defeat also marked his second loss to George, following their previous meeting in the qualifying rounds of last year’s Hong Kong Open.

June Wei’s latest setback comes despite his impressive record at the Lin Dan Cup in China, where he claimed his fifth title in August. The achievement placed him alongside China’s Zhao Junpeng as the only players to have won the competition five times.

The Lin Dan Cup attracts strong domestic competition, making June Wei’s repeated success there a notable achievement. He has also defeated former world No. 11 Zhao Junpeng on his way to winning one of his titles.

However, that form has yet to translate into consistent results at higher-level international tournaments. This season, June Wei has reached the semi-finals of the Korea Masters, a Super 300 event, and the Ruichang China Masters, a Super 100 tournament. He has also finished runner-up at the Azerbaijan International and Phuket International Challenge.

While these results show that he remains competitive at lower-tier events, a deeper run at a major World Tour tournament continues to elude him.

June Wei will have another opportunity to improve his results at the Korea Open, a Super 500 tournament scheduled for November 3 to 8 in Yeosu, South Korea. However, he must first navigate two qualifying rounds to earn a place in the main draw.

Meanwhile, other Malaysian players enjoyed better fortunes at the Hylo Open. Lee Zii Jia advanced to the second round after defeating Singapore’s Teh Jia Heng 21-16, 19-21, 21-17 in a hard-fought three-game encounter.

The mixed doubles pair of Hoo Pang Ron and Lai Pei Jing also progressed, beating the Netherlands’ Joep Strooper and Sterre Bang 21-13, 21-13 in just 25 minutes.

Their progress offered a positive note for Malaysia, while June Wei will be hoping to turn his strong domestic form into more consistent performances on the international stage.
