Malaysia's mixed doubles setup is set for a fresh look after coach Nova Widianto named teenage shuttler Clarissa San as the temporary partner of world No. 4 Chen Tang Jie for the upcoming Japan Open and China Open.
The move comes after regular mixed doubles player Toh Ee Wei suffered a minor tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee during last month's Singapore Open.
With Ee Wei's recovery timeline still unclear and discussions over possible treatment options ongoing, the national coaching team has been forced to explore alternative combinations ahead of a busy stretch of international tournaments.
For Clarissa, the call-up represents the biggest opportunity of her young career. The 19-year-old, who turns 20 next week, has impressed at junior level and earned recognition as one of Malaysia's most promising mixed doubles prospects.
Nova explained that Clarissa's performances over the past year played a major role in the decision. The youngster enjoyed success on the international junior circuit, including consecutive titles at the Bangladesh International Series and Bangladesh International Challenge alongside partner Datu Anif Isaac Datu Asrah.
Currently ranked No. 109 in the world, Clarissa now faces a significant step up in competition as she joins forces with one of the world's leading mixed doubles players.
The partnership is expected to be a short-term arrangement while Ee Wei focuses on her recovery. However, the upcoming tournaments provide an ideal opportunity for Clarissa to gain valuable experience against elite opposition and demonstrate her readiness for the senior stage.
