Ducati’s new 850cc GP27 prototype has completed its first track run at Misano, with early feedback pointing to a promising start as teams prepare for MotoGP’s major regulation shift in 2027.

Ducati has taken an important step toward MotoGP’s new era after debuting its 2027 prototype, the GP27, with encouraging early results at Misano.

The Italian manufacturer joined rivals KTM, Honda, and Yamaha in rolling out its first 850cc machine, marking its entry into development for the upcoming regulation changes.

Veteran test rider Michele Pirro carried out the initial shakedown on April 13 at Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. The session focused on ensuring the bike’s systems were functioning correctly ahead of a more intensive testing programme.

Ducati general manager Gigi Dall'Igna described the first outing as positive, noting that the bike performed well and is ready for further development. The early feedback suggests Ducati has established a solid base for its 2027 project.

The test also offered a first look at key elements that will define MotoGP’s next technical cycle. These include the new 850cc engine platform, updated aerodynamic concepts, and prototype tyres from Pirelli, which will become the sport’s official supplier. The bike was also run using fully sustainable fuel developed with Shell, another requirement under the 2027 regulations.

Following the Misano shakedown, Ducati is set to continue development with a two-day test at Mugello Circuit. Pirro will again lead the programme as engineers gather more data and refine the prototype.

Ducati is also considering expanding its test lineup in the future. Nicolo Bulega has emerged as a potential addition, having secured a contract that includes MotoGP testing duties. The World Superbike frontrunner brings valuable experience with Pirelli tyres, which could prove useful as the series transitions suppliers.

Elsewhere, rival manufacturers are advancing their own programmes. Honda is expected to run its 2027 prototype at Mugello with Takaaki Nakagami, while Yamaha, KTM and Aprilia are preparing tests at Jerez following the Grand Prix weekend. Aprilia is also set to debut its new machine during that session.

With development now underway across the grid, Ducati’s early progress positions it as a strong contender as MotoGP moves closer to its next generation of racing.
