The 2020 MotoGP world champion has explained the health issues that forced him to miss four races, revealing that severe fatigue and vision problems had affected him for weeks before his withdrawal.

Joan Mir has revealed that severe fatigue and vision problems were behind his recent absence from MotoGP, offering an explanation for the difficulties he experienced earlier in the season.

Speaking to the media at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang, the 2020 world champion said his symptoms had gradually worsened in the weeks before he was forced to step away from racing. Among his biggest concerns were visual disturbances and extreme exhaustion, which he struggled to manage.

"The most worrying things were the vision problems, and also the extreme fatigue, which I couldn't control," Mir explained.

The Honda rider suggested that an existing vision problem, combined with the demands of competing in MotoGP, had contributed to his condition. He also believes the health issues may explain some of the difficulties he faced on track, including a series of crashes and inconsistent performances.

"Now I have a lot of answers [about] things that happened," he said.

Mir last competed at the San Marino Grand Prix before missing four rounds. His absence included the Japanese GP, a race he had particularly wanted to contest because he enjoys the circuit and believes Honda is usually competitive there.

Despite wanting to remain involved in the championship, Mir acknowledged that continuing to race while unwell would not have been the right decision. He admitted that missing races was difficult, but recognised that he needed time to recover rather than risk making his condition worse.

"If you don't feel well... whatever you think, it's bad for you," he said.

The Spaniard has now returned to the grid for the Malaysian GP, marking an important step after weeks away from competition. While Honda's current form means he still faces a challenging task on track, understanding the cause of his health problems gives him a clearer starting point as he looks to finish the season on a stronger note.
