Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca will miss the ATP Asian swing as ongoing injury setbacks force him to prioritise recovery ahead of the final stretch of the season.

Brazilian tennis star Joao Fonseca has withdrawn from the upcoming ATP Asian swing, opting to focus on his recovery after a difficult season disrupted by injuries.

The 20-year-old confirmed his decision on social media, meaning he will miss key tournaments including the ATP 500 in Tokyo and the Masters 1000 in Shanghai.

"2026 has been a very challenging year for me," Fonseca said, reflecting on a season in which injuries prevented him from competing at the level he expected.

The young player had already withdrawn from his third-round match in Cincinnati and the US Open because of an abdominal issue. Although he attempted to return for the Davis Cup, Fonseca and his team ultimately decided that additional recovery time was necessary.

"I know that's just part of an athlete's life, but even so, it's still frustrating," he added.

Fonseca's withdrawal comes after a breakthrough period in his career. He reached a career-high No. 24 in the PIF ATP Rankings last season and claimed two tour-level titles. In 2026, he continued to show his potential by reaching his first Masters 1000 quarter-final in Monte-Carlo and advancing to the last eight at a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland Garros.

However, a series of physical setbacks has interrupted his progress, prompting the Brazilian to step away from competition as he works towards a return.

The ATP Tour's European indoor swing begins on October 19, potentially offering Fonseca an opportunity to resume competition if he is ready. No specific comeback date has been confirmed.

For now, the decision provides Fonseca with time to address his injury concerns and prepare for the next stage of his career, with the priority placed on returning to the court in better condition rather than rushing back into competition.
