Malaysia made an impressive start to their Suhandinata Cup campaign, sweeping aside Slovenia 2-0 in their opening Group A1 tie at the World Junior Mixed Team Championships in Cairo.
The Malaysians controlled both games from start to finish, winning the first 55-27 before producing an even bigger 55-22 victory in the second. The commanding result highlighted the team's strength in depth and put them in a strong position ahead of their next group match against Poland.
Malaysia initially held a relatively narrow 22-19 advantage after the opening singles matches, with Kong Wei Xiang and Carine Tee putting their side in front.
The doubles pairings then took over.
Isyraf Hafizin and Ahmad Redzuan conceded just two points in their segment to extend Malaysia's lead to 33-21. Genevie Lim and Low Zi Yu continued the momentum, taking the score to 44-25 before Ahmad Redzuan and Low Zi Yu completed the first game at 55-27.
With the tie already under control, the Malaysian coaching staff used the second game to rotate the squad and give more players valuable match experience.
Tiew Wei Jie immediately made an impact in the boys' singles, racing to an 11-2 victory in his segment.
Damien Ling and Irfan M Shazmir then extended Malaysia's advantage to 33-11 in the boys' doubles, while Rachel Tan and Teh Xin Ying continued the dominant run.
Irfan and Genevie eventually wrapped up the second game, completing another comfortable 55-22 win and giving Malaysia a perfect opening result.
The victory puts Malaysia in a promising position in Group A1, with Poland now standing between them and the top spot. Winning that tie would put Malaysia in position to face the Group A2 winners in a playoff for a place in the quarter-finals.
Malaysia have a strong history in the Suhandinata Cup, having won the title in 2011 and finished runners-up on several occasions. Their campaign last year ended in the quarter-finals after a defeat to China.
After such a convincing opening performance, however, the Malaysian juniors have made their intentions clear. More importantly, the result showed that they have plenty of options across the lineup as they chase another deep run in Cairo.
