Marc Marquez has taken control of the 2026 MotoGP title race after Jorge Martin’s Australian GP crash, leaving Aprilia facing an uphill battle to keep its championship hopes alive.

Marc Marquez has strengthened his grip on the 2026 MotoGP championship after a dramatic Australian Grand Prix weekend left Jorge Martin trailing by 10 points and facing an uncertain recovery from a fractured arm.

Although Sunday's race at Phillip Island was cancelled because of poor weather, Saturday's sprint proved decisive. Marquez claimed victory after an intense battle with Martin, who crashed while challenging for the lead. The result gave the Ducati rider a 10-point advantage in the standings, putting him in a stronger position with four rounds remaining.

The setback was particularly damaging for Martin because it came after several weeks in which he had struggled to protect his championship lead. While the Aprilia rider has shown he can match Marquez for speed, mistakes and missed opportunities have repeatedly cost him valuable points.

Their Australian GP duel highlighted the difference between the two title contenders. Martin appeared to be pushing his Aprilia to its limits, while Marquez looked more composed under pressure. After repeatedly fighting back against the Ducati rider, Martin lost control at Turn 8 on lap eight and crashed, sustaining an injury to his right arm.

Even without the injury, the result would have raised questions about Martin's ability to hold off Marquez in the closing stages of the championship. The Spaniard's immediate challenge is now to recover sufficiently to compete at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang.

The championship swing in Australia was not an isolated incident. Marquez has steadily closed the gap through consistent performances, while Martin and fellow Aprilia rider Marco Bezzecchi have lost ground through crashes, technical issues and other setbacks.

Martin's difficulties were evident at the Indonesian Grand Prix, where tyre pressure concerns and a late mistake cost him the sprint lead. Although Aprilia bounced back with a strong showing in Sunday's race, Martin ended the weekend with only a narrow two-point championship advantage. Bezzecchi also suffered a costly crash at Misano while fighting near the front.

Marquez, meanwhile, has made the most of his opportunities. His consistency has been especially impressive considering he missed two rounds and struggled with performance before undergoing surgery earlier in the season. With fewer mistakes and nine sprint victories to his name, the Ducati rider has given his rivals little room to recover lost ground.

Martin's hopes of turning the championship around will now depend heavily on his physical condition. He is working with his physiotherapist ahead of the Malaysian GP, but must pass medical checks at Sepang before he can return to the track. Even if he is cleared to race, he may not be at full fitness.

The status of the Qatar Grand Prix could also influence the title battle. If the event goes ahead, Martin will face another demanding round while recovering from his injury. A cancellation, however, could give him additional time to heal before the final two rounds in Portugal and Valencia, which offer a combined 74 points.

If Martin is unable to race in Malaysia, Aprilia could turn to Bezzecchi as its main championship contender. However, the Italian trails Marquez by 50 points and has yet to win a sprint race this season, making a late title charge difficult. Marquez's strength in the shorter Saturday races gives him another advantage over his rivals.

Aprilia may therefore need to consider shifting more attention towards the manufacturers' championship, where it holds a six-point lead over Ducati. Securing that title would still represent a major achievement for the team, which has developed the RS-GP into a serious championship contender in recent years.

Martin's title defence is not mathematically over, but the Australian GP has left him with little margin for error. Marquez has momentum, consistency and a points advantage, while Aprilia must hope its leading rider can recover quickly enough to mount one final challenge.
