Marc Marquez claimed his first Grand Prix victory of the 2026 MotoGP season with a dominant performance at Balaton Park, but the Ducati rider insists it is too early to consider himself a genuine title contender as he continues to manage his recovery and fitness.

Marc Marquez delivered his strongest performance of the 2026 MotoGP season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, but the Ducati rider is refusing to get carried away despite a breakthrough victory that has reignited his championship hopes.

The eight-time world champion completed a perfect weekend at Balaton Park by winning both the sprint race and the Grand Prix, collecting the maximum 37 points and securing his first main race victory of the year. Marquez had to fend off a determined challenge from KTM's Pedro Acosta, but ultimately showed the pace and racecraft that made him one of MotoGP's most successful riders.

The result provided a major boost to his position in the championship standings. After spending much of the season trailing the frontrunners by a significant margin, Marquez has climbed to fifth overall and reduced the gap to the leaders.

However, the Spaniard remains cautious about his chances of fighting for the title. He continues to recover from the shoulder injury he suffered in Lombok last year and believes he is not yet operating at full capacity.

Upcoming races at Brno and Assen are expected to provide a clearer picture of his progress. Both circuits place considerable demands on the right side of the body, making them important tests for his fitness. Marquez said he wants to reach what he describes as his "new 100 percent" before making any serious assessment of his championship ambitions.

While Marquez celebrated a long-awaited victory, the Hungarian Grand Prix proved disastrous for Aprilia. Championship contenders Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi were both eliminated in an opening-lap incident that also took out Raul Fernandez, costing Aprilia valuable points in the title race.

The triple retirement has tightened the championship battle and opened the door for rivals to close the gap. Nevertheless, Marquez was more focused on Ducati's strengths than his competitors' setbacks, maintaining his belief that the Ducati package remains the benchmark over the course of a full season.

Away from the track, Marquez also revealed a shift in mentality that has helped him enjoy racing again. After years of placing intense pressure on himself, he is now trying to approach competition with a more balanced mindset while retaining the determination that has defined his career.

That combination of experience, confidence and a renewed perspective could make Marquez one of the biggest threats in the second half of the season. Although he is not ready to label himself a title contender just yet, his performance in Hungary was a reminder that he remains a force to be reckoned with in MotoGP.
