Maverick Viñales will not compete in this weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez as he continues his recovery from a lingering shoulder injury, extending a difficult start to his 2026 season.
The Red Bull KTM Tech3 rider is still regaining fitness after undergoing surgery to correct a displaced screw in his shoulder, an issue linked to an injury sustained in 2025. Although progress has been positive, the team confirmed he is not yet ready to return to racing.
Viñales had initially targeted his home race as a comeback opportunity following a break in the calendar. However, he has opted to prioritise a full recovery rather than risk aggravating the injury. He is now aiming to return at the French Grand Prix in Le Mans next month.
The setback continues a challenging period for the Spaniard, who has yet to score points this season and has struggled with the after-effects of his injury since last year.
Tech3 also faces further complications, as planned replacement rider Pol Espargaró has been ruled out due to injury. As a result, the team is expected to field only one rider, with Enea Bastianini carrying sole responsibility for the squad in Jerez.
Despite the disappointment of missing a key home event, Viñales remains focused on returning in peak condition. He has emphasised that long-term fitness is the priority as he looks to salvage the remainder of his season.
