Mercedes has undeniably hit the ground running, clinching the maximum points from the first three race weekends. Despite George Russell's misfortune in Japan, where safety car timing hindered his result, the Silver Arrows have emphatically lived up to their pre-season favourite status established in Bahrain.
This early advantage isn't solely down to chassis design. Russell highlighted a deeper understanding of their power unit (PU) and optimised energy management as critical factors. Factory teams like Mercedes and Ferrari naturally hold an edge over customer outfits in this complex area. Russell believes this initial lead is not something to get carried away with, warning that early dominance in a new regulations cycle can be misleading.
Russell Flags 2022 as a Warning Sign
“I hope it's just the two of us going for the championship, but I don't want to get ahead of ourselves because I've said this numerous times: in 2022 after three races I think Leclerc had a 30-plus point lead and Verstappen was saying the championship is over. Ferrari were the quickest and then at the end they were not,” Russell remembered.
While Russell is right that early-season form can be deceptive, the current situation carries important differences compared to 2022. Back then, Ferrari and Red Bull were closely matched from the start, whereas Mercedes’ current advantage appears more structured and consistent.
In addition, Ferrari’s early 2022 pace was undermined by reliability issues and Red Bull’s rapid development recovery, particularly after overcoming early car limitations. Mercedes’ present strength, by contrast, is rooted more in operational execution and energy management rather than short-term circumstances. Still, Russell is clear that the real test will come once the development war intensifies across the season.

With all top teams expected to bring significant upgrade packages in the coming rounds, the competitive order is likely to shift again. McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has already indicated a major update package is planned for Miami, with other teams expected to respond in kind.
