The physical demands of MotoGP have once again come into sharp focus after Aleix Espargaró sustained serious injuries during a test crash in Sepang, leaving Honda without one of its key development riders.
Espargaró was taking part in a crucial three-day test at the Sepang International Circuit when he crashed heavily on the opening day. The incident resulted in fractures to his T3 and T4 vertebrae, along with additional damage to two other vertebrae. The injury not only sidelines the experienced Spaniard but also disrupts Honda’s ongoing efforts to improve the RC213V.
He initially received treatment in Malaysia before travelling back to Barcelona for further evaluation. Doctors at Dexeus-Quiron University Hospital confirmed that surgery was required to stabilise the affected areas of his spine. The procedure will be led by neurosurgeon Dr Bartolome Fiol Busquets.
While early assessments indicate there is no damage to the spinal cord, recovery is expected to take time, ruling out any quick return to riding duties.
Despite the setback, Espargaró remains optimistic. In a message shared with fans, he described the crash as severe but expressed confidence in his recovery. He also thanked his Honda team and supporters for their encouragement, with his wife Laura Montero by his side throughout the process.
His determination to return underlines the resilience often seen in MotoGP riders, though for now, both Espargaró and Honda must focus on recovery and regrouping after a significant interruption to their testing programme.
