Honda has officially confirmed the signing of Moto2 star David Alonso on a multi-year contract from the 2027 MotoGP season, adding one of the sport's brightest young talents to its long-term plans. However, the Japanese manufacturer has yet to announce whether the Colombian will race for the factory Honda HRC team or LCR Honda.
The announcement follows months of speculation after Honda secured Alonso's signature earlier this year. While the contract length has not been disclosed, Motorsport.com understands the agreement extends beyond the standard two-year deal typically offered to riders.
Alonso, 20, has enjoyed a rapid rise through the Grand Prix ranks. After finishing third in his rookie Moto3 campaign, he dominated the following season to claim the world title before moving up to Moto2 with the Aspar team in 2025. He will complete the current Moto2 season before making his premier class debut next year.
Honda described Alonso as one of the most exciting prospects in motorcycle racing, with the signing forming part of the manufacturer's rebuilding project ahead of MotoGP's new 850cc regulations in 2027.
The remaining question is where Alonso will line up on the grid. Honda has already confirmed Fabio Quartararo will join the factory Honda HRC squad from 2027, leaving one seat still available alongside the Frenchman. Current Moto2 title contender Diogo Moreira also remains in contention for that ride after signing a multi-year agreement with Honda, while the rider who misses out is expected to race for LCR Honda.
Honda is expected to finalise its complete 2027 rider line-up in the coming months as preparations continue for MotoGP's new era.
