Marc Márquez produced a dramatic and opportunistic victory in the Sprint at the Circuito de Jerez Ángel Nieto, turning a chaotic wet-dry race into another statement win, though the finish was quickly overshadowed by controversy.
Racing under mixed conditions, Márquez showed strong race awareness throughout the Sprint. Running near the front in the closing stages, he initially attempted to stay out on track as conditions evolved. However, a late mistake in the final corner forced him to rethink his strategy and head into the pits.
That decision proved decisive. Switching to a wet setup at the right moment allowed him to regain positions rapidly in the final laps, ultimately securing victory ahead of Fermín Aldeguer and factory Ducati rider Francesco Bagnaia.
The race, however, took a controversial turn due to Márquez’s pitlane entry. After missing the standard entry point, he cut across the grass to reach his garage. Although he ensured no riders were endangered and waited for the field to pass before rejoining, the manoeuvre immediately drew attention in the paddock.
Despite visible debate among competitors and observers, race stewards opted not to launch an investigation, allowing the result to stand. The decision prompted discussion across the paddock, with some rivals questioning whether the move should have been penalised.
Among those expressing concerns was Johann Zarco, who suggested the action warranted review.
When asked about the incident, Márquez remained composed and defended his judgement, maintaining that his priority was safety and adapting to the rapidly changing conditions.
In the end, the Sprint once again highlighted Márquez’s ability to manage high-pressure situations and extract maximum advantage from unpredictable races, even as debate continues off track.
